Artwork Title: Phoenix Flower
A M Hanson
Statement: Phoenix Flower. In this montage edition print from A M Hanson’s photo and installation series “These Studio Cities” (2017), a lily emerges from the city’s shadows into a twilight of activity and renewal. An image selected to represent the cycle of Spring in the metropolis, and a motif and message of hope and solidarity with all those affected by the Grenfell Fire and the ongoing concerns raised by it. A M Hanson (UK, 1969. ed: LCC / UAL, UCA – BA FA Hons first class) is a artist, photographer and film maker. Born in Yorkshire, he has lived and worked in the capital since his late teens. His early London photos portray friends, associates and those from avant garde and emerging creative worlds in social and performative situations. These archive images and story lines can now be seen in publications including “Alexander McQueen The Life and The Legacy” (Harper Design), Leigh Bowery (various, Violette Editions, Piet Meyer Verlag). Hanson has exhibited photo based works in group shows internationally including Tokyo in 2003 and New York in 2008, and across the UK, most recently as part of East London Photo Month, North Contemporary, at Turf projects, with solo shows at Regent’s Place London and Limbo Arts Margate, where a mixed and multimedia installation “A Distant Darkened Lobby” reimagined office spaces as stylised fragments of artists’ studios. Curatorial projects include a test site event for Satellite Festival / Whitstable Biennale and for Photo Month 2016. A M Hanson works from his base in central London on fine art, conceptual and documentary projects, exercising the city itself as an ever-changing studio platform.
